Lettering a Real Bill Thomas Cheetah
THIS IS NOT A REPLICA
It was April of 1964, when Jack Goodman, owner of Clarence Dixon Cadillac in Hollywood California, ordered the only Cheetah to ever to be built, and raced, with a Heavy-Duty Corvette 427ci L88, aluminum head racing engine. It became the #6 Bill Thomas, Cheetah.
Fifty-two years later, I’m re-creating the original hand-lettering on that same Cheetah with a handful of original images handed to me by Bob of BTM who was restoring the Cheetah. From those photos, and doing a bit of my own research, I was able to get the correct scale and style of lettering to match the Cheetah as it had raced with the number 33 though the lettering might look a little better than it did in 1964 as does the metallic silver paint. This body has one of the smoothest and delicately laid silver metallic jobs I've ever seen and over fiberglass no less, cheers to Dave Rose.
This Saturday, January 21st 2017 the Cheetah is going to be auctioned at the famed Barrett Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona. Could this one of a kind Cobra Killer bring seven figures? I can't wait to see!
